If you are stopped by a law enforcement officer for speeding or failure to stop at a stop sign, you can be charged with an infraction and given a "Notice to Appear" citation. If you don't have proof of your car insurance, you may also be charged with an infraction for driving without proof of insurance.

Most infraction citations may be handled by paying a fine and usually do not require a court appearance. A courtesy notice will be mailed to the address listed on the citation which describes all available options. Typically, matters may be handled by mail or in person. If you do not receive a courtesy notice in the mail, you must contact the court prior to the due date on your citation.
